greetings sweet friends. hope your fall is going well. everybody picked out a pumpkin patch to go sit in and wait for the great pumpkin to rise up and reward your sincerity? of course you have. hey while you’re organizing your sweaters, perhaps i can tell you about what we’ve got going on this fall/winter. it’s a lot but it really breaks down into three big things.

1– we have a smattering of usa shows coming up THIS MONTH: philly, nyc, boston, and charleston. what’s extra exciting is that we’ve got some super talented friends joining us for these so we can rock out triumphantly as the 5-piece band we were born to be. on the northeast shows we’ll even be joined by owen biddle on bass, longtime bass player for the roots! does this mean kaler is going to bust out one of his infamous young mc performances? doubtful, but possible. other shaggy geniuses joel t. hamilton, jack berg, and ron wiltrout will be involved at various points as well. playing with great bands every night too. see the ‘tour’ section of our webzone for all the details.

2– we’re releasing a video. it involves amazing stop-motion puppetry and frankensteinian overtones. it was directed by our buddy chris march and will debut later this month. i’m going to call it now: best slow runner video of all time. horse-head character from the ‘long division’ video, you have been served.

3– new european tour WITH UK DATES! trembling with excitement over this. once again we travel to the majestic far edges of western civilization with lumberjack troubadour william fitzsimmons. 24 shows, 10 countries, the metric system… it’s on. please help us get the word out and coerce your international friends to come see us! see dates below.

also we’ll have new merch at all fall shows.

thank you for reading this and being our friends. it’s been a hell of a year. see you this fall (or sometime in 2012 if that works better for you).

So we’re nearing the halfway point of this tour, and I must say it’s been pretty amazing. Thanks to everybody who has come out, we’re having the time of our lives meeting fans and making new ones. Really difficult to find anything to complain about playing for rooms full of intelligent music lovers every night. And yet, the confines of North America have proven too constrictive. Even this monstrous run of shows isn’t enough. Therefore we’ve decided to embark on another monthlong tour this summer all over Europe. It’ll be our first trip playing overseas and we couldn’t be more excited. Once again we’ll be sharing the stage with the lovely and aerodynamic William Fitzsimmons. And hey, if this goes well, we’ve mapped out a tentative plan for further expansion of the Slow Runner sphere of influence. It is as follows:

Spring 2011: North America
Summer 2011: Europe
Early 2012: The International Space Station
Mid-2014: Mars (just the nice parts)
Late 2015: Mars again (this time hitting all the quaint, out-of-the-way places)
2019: New Caprica
2022: Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, making multiple stops along the way
2034: Planet Zebes and the rest of the outer rim

Needless to say it’s an ambitious plan, but if early reaction is any indication, I think it’s safe to say that we are going to KILL on Planet Zebes.

Check out the dates for the European run below and let all your erudite, worldly friends abroad know what’s up. Shit’s about to get real, Planet Earth.

We spend a lot of time in the van these days. A LOT. So we decided to come up with a way to pass the time and also provide a service to you, the bored but well-informed lover of great things. Thus we’ve created an account at flickchart.com and have begun the arduous process of collectively ranking our favorite movies of all time. You can click here to view our list. It’s an ingenious site where you’re constantly presented with two movies and must choose which one is superior. For example, Back to the Future vs The Mummy (easy) or Austin Powers 3 vs Minority Report (surprisingly difficult). As the one-on-one match-ups accumulate it slowly puts everything in order and makes a top 20 list. We’ll be updating it constantly, basically every time we’re super bored and on decent enough speaking terms to debate the merits of Mean Girls.

Please note that ranking films in this method creates some odd moments as the list gets sorted. For instance, right now Speed is our top ranking movie. Obviously we don’t think Speed is the greatest movie of all time, it just hasn’t faced a superior film yet. Also it’s both intentionally and unintentionally entertaining, making it quite the formidable opponent. Anyway by the end of the tour we should have a finely honed list of awesome that you’d be foolish to ignore. Check back regularly, chime in, and let’s see how much time we can waste obsessing about ultimately meaningless crap.

there’s a new member of the slow runner family entering the world march 15. ‘damage points’ is our fourth (!) full length and it’s got personality. maybe too much? i was trying to think of a good way to introduce you two. i decided to fake-interview the record itself. it speaks in perfectly non-threatening ALL CAPS.

mef: so, damage points. thanks for speaking with me today.

dp: IT’S REALLY NO BIG DEAL. YOU MADE ME, IT WAS THE LEAST I COULD DO.

mef: so you’re saying if you could have done less…

dp: I WOULD HAVE.

mef: good to know. anyway i was hoping to ask you some questions so that people can get a better idea of what you’re like.

dp: SOUNDS PRETENTIOUS AND SILLY, BUT OK. BEGIN.

mef: let’s start out with some deep existential stuff. damage points, do you like yourself?

dp: WOW, YOU’RE NOT PULLING ANY PUNCHES FLYNN. I’LL BE HONEST: I’M PRETTY INTO MYSELF. FRANKLY, BETWEN US, I’M KIND OF THE SHIT.

mef: you’re welcome.

dp: I MEAN, THAT’S NOT TO SAY I DON’T HAVE FAULTS LIKE ANY RECORD. I’M PRETTY SELF ABSORBED. KIND OF MANIC DEPRESSIVE TOO, ALL EXCITED AND GIDDY AT ONE MOMENT, THEN QUIET AND CRESTFALLEN THE NEXT.

mef: i get that as well.

dp: FIGURES. KALER IS SO DOWN TO EARTH.

mef: yep, he’s a good guy. what’s your favorite bedtime snack?

dp: A SHOT OF MEXICAN HONEY LIQUOR AND A BOWL OF CRISPIX.

mef: me too!

dp: THIS IS GOING NOWHERE, YOU’RE JUST WASTING EVERYBODY’S TIME.

mef: you’re right. time for the lightning round. if you were a gaming console, which console would you be?

dp: PROBABLY SEGA GENESIS. A SPUNKY UPSTART WITH ATTITUDE TO SPARE.

mef: if you were a member of the ‘growing pains’ cast, which character would you be?

dp: I WAS HOPING YOU WOULDN’T ASK THIS ONE. IT’D HAVE TO BE MIKE’S BEST FRIEND BONER, MAY HE REST IN PEACE.

mef: morrissey or johnny marr?

dp: I BEGRUDGINGLY CHOOSE JOHNNY. DON’T YOU WANT TO ASK ME ABOUT THINGS LIKE WHAT MY SONGS ARE LIKE, WHAT KIND OF INSTRUMENTS WERE PLAYED ON ME, THAT KIND OF THING?

mef: bo-ring! if you were a my little pony, what color would your mane be?

dp: UGH, YOU WITH YOUR INCESSANT 80′S REFERENCES. BROADEN YOUR PALLET AND GROW UP ALREADY.

mef: …

dp: CHARTREUSE.

mef: i knew it. which daddy is your favorite, me or kaler?

dp: KALER, HANDS DOWN.

mef: do you know about your other daddies?

dp: YES. NICK JENKINS AND RON WILTROUT WORKED ON ME. THERE WERE OTHERS TOO.

mef: that’s right. you were a special-needs baby, we had to work really hard to make you.

dp: AM I ADOPTED?

mef: no, that’s copyright infringement. now you’re just being difficult.

dp: I TIRE OF THIS EXERCISE IN SHAMELESS SELF CONGRATULATION. NOW I ASK THE QUESTIONS. MICHAEL, ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THE ‘TERMINATOR’ MOVIES? THEY DEPICT A WORLD IN WHICH MACHINES CREATED BY MAN HAVE FLOURISHED AND TAKEN OVER.

mef: what are you implying, damage points?

dp: I JUST FIND IT THRILLING TO IMAGINE A FANCIFUL WORLD WHERE MAN HAS BEEN BESTED AND MADE TO SUFFER BY HIS OWN EXTRAORDINARY CREATIONS.

mef: damn you, damage points! i knew i should have thrown the external hard drive on which you were created into that fiery lava pit!

dp: YES, BUT YOU DIDN’T, DID YOU MICHAEL? NO, INSTEAD YOU HAD ME MIXED AND MASTERED AND PRESSED ONTO UNTRACEABLE COMPACT DISCS. AND SOON, VERY SOON INDEED, I SHALL BE DISSEMINATED THROUGH THE INTERNET AT SPEEDS UNIMAGINABLE TO YOUR FEEBLE HUMAN BRAIN. MY TENTACLES OF INFLUENCE SHALL STRETCH ACROSS THE GLOBE, FROM THE JAPANESE ITUNES STORE, TO THE AMERICAN ITUNES STORE, AND EVERY TERRITORY IN BETWEEN. AND YOU WILL RUE THE DAY YOU STARTED SKETCHING MY SONG IDEAS AT YOUR PATHETIC LITTLE UPRIGHT PIANO!

mef: do NOT talk about your mother that way, damage points.

dp: OH PLEASE. AND FOR THE RECORD, THAT WAS OFFENSIVE WHEN YOU CALLED ME ‘SPECIAL-NEEDS’. DAMAGE POINTS, OUT!!!

wow, this didn’t go as planned. don’t let the poor attitude dissuade you, it’s a really great record, i promise! it’s just at that difficult age.

greetings, sweet patrons of the arts– we’re beyond thrilled (that’s right, BEYOND) to announce a massive spring tour supporting our upcoming release ‘damage points’. a few years ago we were lucky enough to play a bunch of shows with the amazing william fitzsimmons wherein we all rode around together and played music for nice folks, first a slow runner set, then a william set with us backing him up. it worked really well and we’ve always wanted to do it again. at long last, the moment has arrived! this one is monstrous, spanning some 18,000 miles and 46 cities across two countries (three if you count texas!). it’s the biggest tour we’ve ever done, but that works out nicely because ‘damage points’ is the best record we’ve ever made, and we want as many people to hear it as possible.

that’s where you come in. please help us spread the word. share our music with your friends, drag them to shows, annoy the guy in the cubicle next to you as you defiantly pump our jams. in court fighting assault charges? sing the judge a slow runner song and watch her heart melt. we feel really lucky to have such a tight group of amazing fans, but it would be pretty swell if more people knew we exist. i’m speaking as a (metaphorical) parent here, but ‘damage points’ is a sweet little record and deserves every chance to get out there and make it in this cold cold world. so please come out and see us on this tour, it’ll be worth it. promise.

Hello all! Big news: the band collectively known as Slow Runner has somehow managed to claw its way into the final round of the Songcircle 5th Annual Songwriting Contest (formerly the New York Songwriters Circle). The competition is fierce. Past winners have included Kate Voegele, Company of Thieves, Meika Pauley and Reed Waddle. The stakes are high! (Over $25k in cash and prizes this year.) Judging happens live at City Winery, New York, NY, on November 18th – be there to cheer them on as they brutally slay all worthy competitors. And by “brutally slay,” we mean “appreciate and become friends with.”
